5 Philly Green Nonprofits to Support
August 17th has been coined as National Nonprofit Day. A day set aside to recognize all of the efforts not just these organizations but also all of the people behind the scenes who continue to pour into communities and causes all around the world.
While the Bloc team can go on forever about our favorite nonprofits we love to support, we've decided to highlight five nonprofits in Philly dedicated to improving this lovely planet we call home.
Clean Air Council is a member-supported environmental organization serving the Mid-Atlantic Region. The Council is dedicated to protecting and defending everyone’s right to a healthy environment. The Council works through a broad array of related sustainability and public health initiatives, using public education, community action, government oversight, and enforcement of environmental laws.
We enhance communities through education, sustenance and self-sustainability
1.2 billion of the Earth's people live in poverty and poor health. Lack of food, water, and income are the main reasons for this. We aim to bring income-generating resources and technology as well as nourishment to underserved communities so that they may thrive for generations to come. This is not an easy goal but we are up to the challenge! However, we also know that we are all collectively co-creating what we hope for ourselves and our Earth.
Bike & Build engages young adults in service-oriented cycling trips to raise awareness for the affordable housing cause. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that fosters a sustained connection to community. We advocate for the need for affordable housing in thousands of communities across the country.
GSCDC is a Community Development Corporation that is focused on Environmental Conservation and Beautification. Our Directors are aware of the issues per neighborhood all over the city. We are not limited to one area or one demographic as an organization or as citizens. We do not cater to any one group of “like minded” people or any ethnic groups, or people that share the same zip code. Green Space is defined by its name. We are not dedicated to the recovery of any specific area, or type of group or organization. Green Space was founded in and serves Pennsylvania, and has an initial focus on The City Of Philadelphia.
Soil Generation is a Black & Brown-led coalition of gardeners, farmers, individuals, and community-based organizations working to ensure people of color regain community control of land and food, to secure access to the resources necessary to determine how the land is used, address community health concerns, grow food and improve the environment.
We wanted to especially highlight these local ones because as mentioned in our previous blog post, the behaviors and activities of humans have consequences on our planet. The teams behind these orgs listed above are working tirelessly to try to lesson the carbon footprint of communities and helping to build a more sustainable future.
With that being said, try to use National Nonprofit Day (or any day in general) to celebrate some of your favorite local nonprofits. You could do this by sending an email thanking them for their work, donating to their causes, shout them out on your social media pages or maybe even volunteer some of your time to the cause if you're able to!
We will continue to salute those who are dedicating their lives to making a difference in our world.
